cannot see home folder on desktop or Time Machine

Hopefully someone on here will have had a similar experience to this, when I go to my hard drive, open it and go to the Users folder, my actual user account folder isn't there – there's a "Guest" and a "Shared" folder in there but not my home folder?

I have also noticed that Time Machine isn't backing up my desktop or my User folder either – I've created a new user and that appears in the Users folder so is there some sort of corruption or other issue with my original User folder that needs fixing?
